Which Clutch Kit is right for me?
In general, the best answer for this question is decided once we can identify what you would ideally like to get out of your machine in performance and drivability. The feedback we receive most about the Wolverine X2 / X4 lineup is that they are geared incredibly low, limited by speed and very noisy when driving and at higher speeds due to elevated RPM's. Most of our clutch kit options we aim to keep or improve bottom end take off engagement, reduce engine cruising RPM and increase top speeds.
- If you are looking to improve the overall performance of your machine from bottom end take off engagement all the way through improved top end speeds our “Improved All Around Performance Clutch Kit” will be the solution for you. This kit is offered in both Stock Size and Oversize Tire Options and is our most popular kit. You will see improvements in all areas of the clutch operation including bottom end power, low speed engagement with reduced throttle pedal sensitivity, lowered cruising RPM’s and higher overall top speeds. (ECU Tuning is required for top speed limiter removal)
- If you are not concerned about Engine Noise or Top Speeds while driving but primarily want to increase the bottom end performance of the machine, then our “Improved Bottom End Clutch Kit” will be the best fit. Running this kit will slightly reduce overall top speed and slightly elevate engine RPMs across the entire clutch shift phase but will provide a much-improved bottom end power band and take off engagement. We off this kit in both Stock and Oversized Tire Options.
- If you are not at all concerned with the bottom end performance of the machine and are looking for the best solution to lower the Engine RPM then our “Lowered Cruising RPM Clutch Kit” will be the answer. When running this kit, you will notice that bottom end take off power will be more sluggish, but you will see Cruising RPM’s drop anywhere from 800-1200 RPM depending on speeds which is a dramatic decrease to in cab noise while driving. We do offer options for this in both Stock and Oversize tire combinations.
What if I have stock tires now but plan to upgrade to larger tires later?
All our clutch kits are offered in both Stock and Oversized options. In most cases the difference between what we use to set up stock vs. the over sized tire option will be with the use of the primary clutch shim. We include the primary clutch shim in all our Wolverine X2 / X4 Clutch Kits however we recommend not using the shim for stock tire setups in most cases. When changing over from stock size tires to oversized tires this would be the ideal time to install the clutch shim to make up for the gearing loss with oversized tires.
If I already have ECU tuning, does it need to be updated when installing a new clutch kit?
There is no need to update the ECU tuning when using our clutch kits. All our clutch testing and setups were designed with the use of our ECU tuning. If you are looking to increase overall top speeds in any of the clutch setups it will be required to have the Speed and Throttle Limiters unlocked in the ECU, however.
What kind of top speed can I expect to gain or lose with the clutch upgrades?
With stock ECU tuning there will be no gain or loss with top speeds as the Speed and Throttle Limiters will come into effect before the full potential of the clutching is achieved. With our ECU tuning we do remove the speed and throttle limiters which then only leaves the vehicle limited by RPM. In most cases we see an average of 7-10mph increase at overall top seed and RPM.
How much RPM drop can I expect to see with the clutch kit installed?
- With our “Improved All Around Performance Clutch Kit” we see on average RPM reductions of 750-950 RPM at speeds.
- With our “Lowered Cruising RPM Clutch Kit” we see on average RPM reductions of 1000-1400 RPM at speeds.
- With our “RMAX Improved Bottom End Clutch Kit” we see on average RPM which remains like stock or just slightly lowered from stock.
Do I need to run grease with the roller weights in my clutch setup?
Grease is not required to be run in any of our clutch kits which utilize any of the HV Replacement Roller weights. We do recommend running grease in all clutch setups however the HV Roller weights and Sliders provided can be ran without grease in the Sliding Primary Sheave. When reusing stock weights (used in our improved bottom end kits) it is especially important to use grease during the installation. We do carry and sell Tinkseal in 4oz. containers which is more than enough grease for full clutch services as well as use in each weight pocket.
