WELLER RACING News

By Corry Weller

New Face/Voice Coming to Weller Racing

February 2008

Weller Racing would like to welcome it's newest employee to the WR team, as Corry Weller - (me!) - takes the plunge and will be starting full-time work behind the counter starting March 1st.  Corry will be the voice you hear on the phone when you call in, and will also be responsible for writing up service work, helping with sales questions, and making sure our customers are well taken care of.  Along with building the best motors around, we are continually striving to provide the best customer service possible despite our dizzying growth!  Be sure to stop in and say hello!

YAMAHA RHINO RALLY

December 2007

Thanks to the fine folks over at Yamaha Motor Corp. in Cypress, CA, rhino owners everywhere got an excuse to hit the dunes this past weekend, sharing good times, fun rides, collecting lots of swag and showing off their toys!

Yamaha went all out and brought out a lot of semi's, huge tents and a ton of demo rides for people to try out over the weekend!  Rhino owners only were allowed to participate in a very fun poker run on Saturday morning, with finishers winning raffle tickets for one of the many raffles held for the weekend. Raffle tickets were won for the cleanup on Sunday as well, and there were still more raffle tickets that could be purchased in a benefit raffle - the grand prize being custom plastics!

Yamaha supplied lunch for everyone on Saturday for a small donation of $5 which would help the ASA, held a large Show and Shine where everyone could vote on their favorite rhinos, and even had a huge inflatable movie screen hauled in where everyone could watch Shrek 3 once the sun set!

Weller Racing did great this weekend - even though it wasn't a race, we were still happy to be the first ones finished with the Poker Run on Saturday morning!  Also, we heard we did very well in the Show and Shine, although we weren't there to claim our prize due to being held up at Olds Hill with the reporters from the LA Times!  The camera guy was trying his best to rig up his camera to my rhino to get a run filmed going up Olds....and even though we tried many times, the equipment was just not able to handle the whoops!

It was still fun, and we thought it was very cool that everyone liked our rhino so much!

Fellow CORR racers were also at the rally, Todd Arthur and the HRT crew came out to support, as well as Chad George and both of the Funco race rhinos!  Donny Kerr was also present with his blue race rhino, so CORR was well represented!

We camped with the Rhinoforums.net group, and were fortunate enough NOT to witness Brian's accident which resulted in a broken arm!  Best wishes to Brian and his family as he heals up! Also, big thanks to the Quinns for constantly offering us food and for the YUMMY hot pickles!  Jim, I'm going to be getting that recipe from you soon! We also got some lessons in Sobe bomb making, but still have some practicing to do.....more bottles next time!

Sat night Jason and I got to hang out with some good friends, and met a bunch more cool people!  Big thanks to Steve for letting us join the party, and tackle that huge bottle of JD!

The weather for the weekend was perfect, and things couldn't have gone any better! We hope Yamaha comes out and does this again every year - we will definitely be out there again in 2008!

WELLER RACING DEBUTS NEW RACE RHINO - CORRY WELLER LEADS THE PACK!!

November 2007

Drawn like a moth to the flame, Weller Racing once again found themselves mingling with the best of the best in offroad racing - this time at the final race of the 2007 CORR season held at Primm, NV!  Working hard for 5 weeks prior to this race, we took my trusty little blue stock racer and turned it into a lean, mean, CORR racing machine - with HUGE thanks to Induced Fabrication, XMF, SRT Locks, Crankworks and my engine guru, Jason Weller (and Jeff!) for all the time, blood, sweat and tears that they put into this racer to get it ready to go for this last race of the year!

My new CORR racer was finished late Thursday night, making it an early morning Friday when we pulled out with the trailer in tow at 3am to make it in time for registration and practice.  Arriving in the nick of time, we were escorted into our reserved space and were able to set up our pit and register with no wait.  Not everyone was so fortunate, however - as rhino racers who showed up later than us had to wait at the gate for over 3 hours.

Once again, I had to get used to a new machine at an actual race - I never got to drive the new racer before we arrived at Primm.  I used practice to get used to the feel of my new power and my new chassis, and I was so excited to jump and NOT bottom out on anything! (Thanks Xtreme!)  Practice went well, but with some traction issues with all of my newfound power.

Saturday morning qualifiers went very well and I qualified in 6th place out of about 24 racers!  I was starting to figure out how my new rhino handled, and things were just starting to get FUN!  Racetime came soon after, and it was showtime!  Starting in 6th place, I had some traction issues still to figure out, so I was passed by a number of racers as I learned how to make the most of my newfound power.  Getting in the groove, I began passing racers one by one, until I worked my way back to up 6th place, having some great battles on my way back up!  As the checkers flew, I finished in 6th place - and was totally excited!

Once our races were over, it was straight to the stands to watch the remainder of the day's races - as my rhino didn't require any work at all - so Jason could relax and we could enjoy the day!  Racing was awesome, as always!!!  After the races, we found our room at Buffalo Bills and got to hang out at the Tree Bar, rub elbows, and ride the roller coaster!

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear - another day of racing lay just ahead!  Arriving in time to detail the rhino and get it all shiny and clean,  it was announced that there would be NO practice for the rhinos on this day!  I would have really liked to have just a bit more seat time in my new rhino, but what can you do?  One thing about racing CORR, you get used to the last minute changes - and learn to go with the flow!

For the last time in 2007, all of the CORR Mod/Pro rhinos followed the pace truck around once...twice....giving me enough time to check out my lines (track looked NICE!) and feel out the good traction spots.  I radioed to Jason "This is going to be FUN!", just before the pace truck pulled off.  Starting in the third row once again, I quickly planned my route to the deepest inside line of the first corner.  To get where I wanted to go, I would have to pass several rhinos in the first hundred feet or so.  "Green! Green! Green!" shouted Jason, and my pedal hit the floor as my Weller 720 stroker launched forward, making quick work of all but one of the rhinos in front of me.  I got my line, and I held the inside as I raced for the second corner.  Taking the inside once again, I dove into the corner, making sure I closed the door before I headed out of the apex of the turn with gobs of torque!  Suddenly, I found myself in a place I hadn't seen before in CORR racing!  All I had in front of me was wide open, empty track - and alot of flying roost and spinning tires right behind me!  I didn't lift off the accelerator as I tried to put as much space between me and the pack as I could.  I had taken a hit in the last corner, but didn't think much of it, until a bit farther on in the race Chad George passed me, taking over the lead.  As I got on the gas getting ready to race him to the next corner something let loose in the back and I almost careened off the track on the left.  I put on the brakes, not knowing what happened, and that sent me careening sideways off to the right.  Swerving back and forth, I finally got control again and realized my rhino was now VERY hard to steer!  Suspecting a broken axle or steering rack, I radioed Jason that something was broken, and I made it into the hotpits so he could check it out.

Sure enough, I was now running on one axle, as my left axle suffered some terminal damage in the hit I had taken earlier.  I have finished every race I've started in the past 7 years, and this would not be my first DNF - I pulled back out onto the track and just concentrated on staying as straight and steady as possible, while also staying out of the leaders' way.  Even with a broken axle, and out of the race on this day, you couldn't wipe the smile off of my face from the great run I had just had!  Taking the checkers in 16th place, I pulled off with some thumbs up from the track staff, and picked up Jason to head to our pits.  With high fives all around, everyone congratulated everyone else, and it was off to the stands once more to watch the days Pro truck races!

Our last weekend of the 2007 CORR Season was everything we had wanted, and we can't be more excited for the upcoming 2008 race season!  With some time between now and May, I will have plenty of time to get very comfortable with my new racer so that I can be as competitive as possible next year!  Thanks to CORR, XXX Rhinos, and all the CORR racers for a great series!

ROUND 4 RRL - RACING FOR THE MONEY GETS NUTZ!!

August 2007

Well, once again rhino racers from all over the Phoenix area came together at Speedworld for another round of the Rhino Racing League.  Due to the fact that many racers and sponsors thought this was the final round of the series, many companies stepped up and spiced up the action a bit by offering CASH for the top 3 racers in EACH class!!  And it wasn't just a little cash - it was more than most racers have seen at any race.  For the lucky Mod 1 racers, it was an even sweeter pot with a full set of OMF beadlocks and a PDM Clutch on the line for 1st and 2nd place finishers in their class!

With money on the line, and track changes that had been made, the racing action was fast and furious - with an emphasis on furious, as many racers went out there with one thing on their minds.  Even the normally mellow stock class got a bit nutz, with much banging going on with the race for the front position.

It was a good night for Weller Racing, with Bobby Vanbeekum taking both holeshots, and a first place win in the last moto in the Pro class with his 800 motor.  I got a 2 2 in the stock class, along with a holeshot that had me leading for most of the 2nd moto, until 1st place finally got around.

Fans loved it, racers had a good time, and after it was all over, there was the normal trophy presentation along with the NOT so normal cash and awards payout.  Due to some mix-up in the money situation, though - the 2nd place winners sort of missed out on the whole cash thing.....last I heard they were trying to figure a way to make it fair for the 2nd place Pro racer, after I backed out of the whole messy situation with nothing but a pretty beat up rhino.....thankfully, my hubby stepped in with a big Weller Racing sponsorship, and fixed me up WAY better than new!  Thanks Jason!  Just in time for CORR!

Weller Racing Goes To.....

Championship Off Road Racing CORR

Antelope Valley, CA

Sept 2007

After having witnessed CORR racing first hand in Chula Vista several months ago, Weller Racing was determined to make the next round and be a part of the racing action!

I entered my stock rhino in the Super Stock class, who's restrictions are only a stock motor, and stock a-arms - while Bobby V. entered his racer in the Modified class, where some of the most intense competition in rhino racing can be found!  After the long drive to Antelope Valley, it was great to have 3 full days of on-track action, including practices and qualifying.

Antelope Valley is a great facility, complete with showers and clean restrooms, a great grandstand area, and a huge paved Pit area for racers to work on their machines without tons of dust and dirt flying around.  The weather was perfect, if a bit windy at times, and the crew at the track was on the ball!

After two days of racing, and seeing what Cali brings to the table, we feel we are in a good position to bring a bit of out-of-state competition to the CORR series.  Bobby V took the 2nd fastest lap time in qualifying, earning him a 2nd place start in the mains on Sat.  Even with some carb gremlins, Bobby placed 3rd on Saturday in the main, after showing just how fast his 800 motor is on the straights!  In Super Stock - since there were only two of us, I raced XXX's Luke in his very cool, very low and wide rhino - and took 2nd on Sat.

Sunday's racing action would begin just like Saturday's, with a fun practice to help us get to know the track (which had gotten peakier, by the way!) and to pick our lines for the race ahead.  Choosing to opt out of practice, Bobby kept his rhino clean, while I needed to see what changes had been made, and find better lines than I had the day before!

In Sunday's main, the UTV Mod class was inverted - meaning the top 10 would not line up as they finished, but opposite of their finish the day before - putting Bobby V back in 8th position - leaving him to battle it up to the front.   While Bobby made a great run at it, this would not be his day as the gremlins reared their head again, and he would be unable to finish.  I had just the opposite luck in my class - as my competition broke halfway through the race, allowing me to finish the race in 1st place, and taking 1st place overall for the weekend!

Weller Racing will be back at CORR in two weeks, at Chula Vista - if you see us in the pits, be sure to come say HI!

RHINO RACING LEAGUE ROUND 2  - GREAT TURNOUT!!

20+ Entries for Round 2 at Speedworld!

July 2007

Round 2 is now officially in the books and was a tremendous success, with over 20 rhinos showing up to compete on one of the best tracks in Arizona!  Held at in conjunction with the Speedworld Quadcross Series, the RRL race was definately a spectator favorite for the evening, with people jamming along the fenceline and clogging the stands just to get a look at the Rhinos when they hit the track!

Weller Racing had a great, if somewhat eventful night as all three sponsored racers podiumed in all three classes.  Congrats to Bobby Vanbeekum for 1st place in Mod 2, Justin Quinn for his 1st place in Mod 1, and congrats to Corry Weller (me!) for her 2nd place finish in Stock!  2nd moto holeshots were all dominated by Weller machines, as Weller Racing has proven they know how to tune a Rhino!

Practice was just the beginning, as the racing action was close in many classes, and lots of contact was made on the track as drivers competed for places in their class!  As is fairly standard for Rhino racing, there were the rollovers and two-wheeling happening, which the crowd reacted LOUDLY to, and as is also common with Rhino racing, there were no injuries - so it was a great night for everyone!

Thanks to the RRL and Jeff Haworth for the AWESOME trophies!!  In 6 years of racing, I have never gotten a trophy so big for a regular race!  Once the trophies were handed out, even more excitement ensued as fingers were pointed and accusations were made regarding the Mod 1 winner, Justin Quinn.  Pulling holeshots and winning classes must raise eyebrows, because there were a few racers sure that Justin was running something illegal.  After a LONG argument and drunk people talking too much, the decision was made to tear down Quinn's engine - the protest was on!  Jason and Jeff Weller got to work, and soon it was proven to all that Justin's motor was perfectly legal for his class!  He was just a fast driver!  Money was handed over, and that was that....

Stay tuned for Round 3 of the RRL - coming up on August 11 - my prediction for this round is 30 entries - as many racers who couldn't make it this time, have said they were going to race this next one! Should be an awesome show!

Weller Racing has volunteered this year to help with tech for the RRL.

Bobby Vanbeekum has the fastest Rhino currently in the RRL - probably the fastest Rhino engine in the state!

SPEEDWORLD PRACTICE - GREAT UTV TURNOUT!!

July 2007

This past Friday night saw a great UTV turnout at Speedworld, mostly due to the planning on www.rhinoforums.net inspired by the UTV racers looking forward to participating in the next Speedworld Quadcross rhino racing class!  Practice is not just for racers, however, as many rhino owners came out to try their hand at driving on a motocross track in their non-race or "almost race" rhinos as well!

Thanks to Speedworld for giving us rhino owners as many practice sessions as possible, insuring that everyone got their $20 worth and left with a smile on their face!  Apparently the rhinos were popular with the bike and quad racers as well, as the stands were never empty when the rhinos hit the track, thanks to the excitement created by Billdo and Nick from Rhino Crap with their dirt sampling!  Too bad I didn't any good pics from this practice, but we were on the track for every practice that we could squeeze in after arriving a little late.

Apparently attrition isn't just for racing, as a number of rhinos didn't quite make the whole night without breaking something....but there were enough left at the end of the session to get one more 20 minute moto before they shut the track down for the night!

It's always great to see everyone, and it seems there are always new people to meet and welcome into the sport!  We are looking forward to seeing everyone this Saturday night at Speedworld for Round 2 of the Rhino Racing League, and round 2 of the Speedworld Quadross Series!  See you at the races!

RHINO RACING LEAGUE ROUND ONE!

June 2007

The "tree jump" was the favorite hangout for anyone with a camera!

Many of you will remember the Arizona Sandfest from earlier this year, put on by Jeff Haworth and company – the Sandfest had a great turnout of spectators and racers alike, showcasing the buggies, trucks and UTV racers in Arizona.  Following along those same lines, but focusing purely on the UTV racers, Jeff has created a new, Arizona Rhino racing series that we call the RRL (so much shorter and easier to say! Haha).  After meeting with the racers, coming up with rules that they felt were fair but still SAFE (top priority) for everyone, the RRL had it’s first round finally at Canyon Offroad Park, located North of Phoenix.

The course was kept on the offroad portion of the track, since the MX track was closed and the circle track was not available at the time – so they added a few jumps to a fairly level course and turned the first round racers loose in the desert!  Being a flat, wide open course, it was all about horsepower and power to weight ratios this time.  The Stock class had a good time just trying to keep it on all 4 wheels, as they discovered all required stock CDI’s are NOT equal.  This issue will most likely be fixed by allowing aftermarket CDI’s at some point in the future, and therefore evening things up a bit for the stock racers……

A tricky part of the course to get through was what I call the “rock garden” due to the ostrich egg sized rocks that littered several corners before the course opened up again and headed for the “tree jump” – the biggest jump on the course that everyone gathered at to watch as racers would either pin it and launch, or tentatively hit it after hitting their brakes first.  This was a popular picture taking area due to the air some of the rhinos were able to get!

With only 9 entries for this first race, the turnout was smaller than what was hoped for, but there was still alot of fun to be had with the racers who did show up, and with a more relaxed atmostphere, many spectators were able to watch from the infield as well as alongside the track.

Heat races and then the mains were all finished before it got too hot, and everyone was loaded up and heading home as the sun really hit hard, with some racers stopping for a burger on the way home at Canyon's local burger joint!

Join us next time for the next round coming up July 14th, at Speedworld MX park, as round 2 gets underway with a bigger turnout and a fun, MX course to test rhinos and racers!

SPEEDWORLD QUADCROSS  RHINO RACING

June 2007

Well, since I have been riding, Dan Matthews (owner of Speedworld Motocross Park – my favorite local track) has always been the one to step up and take the risks……Speedworld was the only track I could practice at back in 2001 on my quad…..then he tried building us quads our own quad track….which was cool!  Due to a scattered and unreliable quad turnout, he just couldn’t keep it maintained and still not lose money, so we lost our quad track.  Then he was the first track in AZ to bring the ITP Quadcross Series to Arizona - a risk that paid off with a record turnout for that California series every time it came to the valley.  Well, once again, Dan has been the one to step up and take a chance on a new series – the Speedworld Quadcross Series, where he has made sure us UTV racers also have a place to race, and on a track many of us have wanted to get our rhinos out on anyway!

For the first round of a totally new, quad only series, there was quite the turnout!  And one of the favorite races of the night was the UTV race, with about 15 rhinos showing up to give the track a try!  Split into three classes, the UTV’s all lined up for a single gate start….and it was a mad rush for the first corner, as there was some serious bumping and grinding and squeezing out going on in the front!  Having raced this race myself, I wasn’t witness to the now famous battle between CrashmandThrashm and Bobonthis – but I did get to see the carnage which resulted from their fierce battle for first place!  Having my own battle with a few fellow racers, I also got to witness Mr. Offroad tip over right in front of me, complete with flying steering wheel and chirping alarm!  His in-car camera recorded our whole race, and the ending was just classic!

All in all, I know everyone had a great time racing on a fun, UTV friendly track in front of a lot of spectators; being under the lights at night so we weren’t all roasting in our firesuits was just an added bonus!

For the next round, it’s been confirmed that the Rhino Racing League will be combining it’s series with the Speedworld races – keep your eyes and ears open for more details on how the rules for the classes will all play out, and if that will change the race fees at all.  I think the next round will see a lot more UTV racers, and hopefully the Stock class will grow a lot this summer!  Stock is an inexpensive way to race – parts are cheap, you don’t need a lot to get started, and with a good eye on classes, it could be the most equal and fair class of them all to be racing in.  Besides that, it’s just fun – as you can tell by the giggles and whoops you usually hear from the drivers as they go by.

Hope to see you all at the next race coming up on July 14th!

WHIPLASH FIREBIRD GRAND PRIX

April 28 - 29

The turnout for the UTV class was one of Whiplash Racing's best to date, as many racers gave the new track a try.

Racing this weekend kicked off with what seemed like a record numbers of racers, and record heat as Whiplash's Firebird Grand Prix got underway at the well known Firebird International Raceway.  The race this weekend occurred in conjunction with jet car races and the Monster Truck jam, bringing in tons of fans that might otherwise have never had the chance to see bikes, quads, trucks, buggies and UTV's race in the dirt!!

Thanks to Whiplash for a fun weekend, and a great track!  Races went off on time, and stayed pretty close to schedule despite a few delays throughout each day.

The great battle to watch in the Quad Pro class was between John Shafe and Justin Zembo, as those two battled hard both days for their wins.  Shafe won his class on Saturday, while Zembo won the Pro class on Sunday. Kyle Pethers and Jeff Hancock both did a litlte soil sampling, but despite his bad spill on Saturday, Pethers was back racing on Sunday.  Hancock was OK after his wreck on Sunday, but his lovely black Polaris had to be carried off the track on the nimble teeth of a tractor.

The bikes ran a slightly different course than the quads, getting the man-made obstacle course complete with a log stack and a rock pile, which caused it's own pile-up of bikes at one point in the race!

You couldn't miss the flying roost and engine noise of the trucks and buggies each time they took to the course to tear it up!  Even though there was a BITD race the same weekend, there was still a good turnout of the larger desert race machines that decided to give Firebird a shot, and the fans loved it.

Perhaps one of the favorite classes to watch for spectators, the UTV races went off without a hitch both days, giving everyone some great racing action!  Complete with roll overs, flips, and a lot of rhino carnage, the heat races and main races were fun to race in and watch.  Rhinos were predominant, but a number of TomCar's showed up to support UTV racing and Sanderson Ford, who sponsored the event! There was even a very brave Pilot and China Lite car that came out to participate in Whiplash's newest class.  Zac McKinley had some fun leading the entire field for a short time in his souped up TomCar, while the rest of the TomCar field had a good time battling it out with each other and the stock rhinos.  Results aren't posted yet, but there was some great close racing between Ryan Woon, Bobby VanBeekum, and Skyer Stewart in the Pro Mod class, which ended on Sunday with Vanbeekum being hit from behind and his Rhino catching on fire briefly!  Good thing for fire extinguishers and some quick reaction times!

Check out our pics in the Photo Galleries, and keep checking www.whiplashracing.com for the results to be posted!  See you at the races!

BIG UTV RACING WEEKEND COMING UP!!!

Where will you be racing??

May 18,19, 20

If you like to race quads, bikes or UTV's, then May is a good month for you!  BITD and Whiplash both have quad/bike/UTV races going on - the only problem is, they are the SAME WEEKEND!  May 19th and 20th.  So....looks like we all have a choice to make - and it's not an easy one!

BITD is having their first ever Blue Water Grand Prix, to be held at the infamous Blue Water Resort in Parker, AZ.   For this race, BITD will be running a shorter, 11 mile course made up of approx 7-9 laps which will give everyone a chance to go through their pit area a number of times throughout their race!  For UTV's, this is a GOOD THING!  Having raced Parker, we really like the surrounding area and really enjoy the quality of race that BITD puts on, so we want to wish everyone GOOD LUCK if they go the BITD route!  For more info check out www.bitdracing.com

Whiplash Offroad, Arizona's own offroad racing organization, is also having an ATV/bike/UTV Grand Prix style race, only this one is closer to home - to be held near the Fort McDowell Casino just East of Fountain Hills.    From the feedback heard from last year, this is a fun race, and a fun course - we have also heard they could be making this course longer than last year....but this hasn't been confirmed.  We are expecting a good turnout at this race due to it's close proximity to Phoenix, and considering what a great turnout Whiplash just had at their Firebird race!  Rumor has it, Whiplash might also be trying out an electronic scoring system soon - maybe we will see it at this race!  For more info check www.whiplashracing.com

Firebird Sunday pics are up!

Day Two at the Whiplash Firebird GP was just as exciting as day one - and just as HOT - and we don't mean just from the sun (rhino + getting hit from behind = fire)!   Another great turnout, as most racers made a weekend out of it, and raced both days!

Check out our pics!!

Firebird Sat. pics are up!

Day One at the Whiplash Firebird Raceway Grand Prix went off with what seemed like a huge turnout of both racers and spectators!  Quads, bikes, trucks, buggies and UTV's all had a chance to ride in front of tons of race fans!  Stay tuned for day two coming up next!  Enjoy the pics!

ITP Round 3 at ACP AZ pics are up!

Round 3 of the ITP Quadcross Series held at Arizona Cycle Park saw Dustin Nelson showing everyone why he is the 2006 Quadcross champ, as he took a solid win in the Pro main, despite the blue grooved, dusty and windy conditions

AZ Sandfest Sunday pics are up!

Sunday at the Sandfest saw So Cal Fab taking the win in the UTV Main, with SDHQ rounding off the podium with 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

AZ Sandfest Saturday pics are up!
